SENTENCED PRISONERS

At 30 June 2014:

    • The proportion of prisoners that were sentenced varied from 65% (1,620 sentenced prisoners) in South Australia to 81% (4,973 sentenced prisoners) in Victoria. (Table 13)

    • There was an increase in sentenced prisoners across all states and territories, with the exception of Tasmania, which decreased by 5% (18 prisoners) since 30 June 2013. The largest increases in the number of sentenced prisoners occurred in Queensland (increase of 642 prisoners or 14%) and Victoria (increase of 587 prisoners or 13%). The number of sentenced prisoners reached their highest levels since 2004 in all states and territories with the exceptions of New South Wales and Tasmania. (Table 25)

    • Acts intended to cause injury was the most common serious offence for sentenced prisoners in:

        – New South Wales (17%)

        – Queensland (20%)

        – Western Australia (18%)

        – Tasmania (17%)

        – Northern Territory (50%)

        – Australian Capital Territory (23%). (Table 23)


    • In Victoria, offences against justice procedures was the most common serious offence for sentenced prisoners (18% or 885 prisoners). (Table 23)

    • In South Australia, sexual assault was the most common serious offence for sentenced prisoners (16% or 261 prisoners). (Table 23)

    • The proportion of sentenced prisoners that were sentenced in the previous 12 months varied from 35% in South Australia to 64% in the Australian Capital Territory. (Table 25)

    • The median aggregate sentence length for sentenced prisoners was highest in South Australia (4.5 years) and lowest for the Northern Territory (1.3 years). (Table 23)

    • The median expected time to serve for sentenced prisoners was highest in South Australia (3.3 years) and lowest in the Northern Territory (1 year). (Table 23)
